The Valkyries: Chooser of the Slain.
The Valkyries are female warlike virgins, who mount mostly upon horses and arms themselves with helmets, spears, or swords. They have white wings thinner than an angels, but in the same location.They decide who will die in a battle. They will watch over the battlefield.There will be six, seven, nine, or thirteen Valkyries at a time. They will select among half of those who die in battle, and then bring them to Valhalla. The other half will go to the goddess Freya’s afterlife field Folkvangr. Freya always has the first pick of the fallen Vikings. Odin allows some of the maidens to take the form of beautiful white animals like swans, ravens, horses, wolves, or bears even. If a Valkyrie has intimate relations with a human she will lose her wings and become an ordinary mortal that can never again return to Valhalla as a Valkyrie, unless permitted to do so by Odin.
