The Alchemist follows the journey of an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago. Santiago, believing a recurring dream to be prophetic, decides to travel to a Romani in a nearby town to discover its meaning. A gypsy woman tells him that there is a treasure in the Pyramids in Egypt. Early into his journey, he meets an old king, Melchizedek, who tells him to sell his sheep to travel to Egypt and introduces the idea of a Personal Legend. Your Personal Legend is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is. He adds that, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. This is the core theme of the book. Throughout his travels he meets a Master Alchemist who teaches him what Alchemy really is. I suggest this book to anyone who loves a good story, who wants to be closer with the world, or to learn about Alchemy (not in the material sense but the soul of it).

Sounds interesting. I love reading and am open to new ideas but I'm always side tracking. What deeper meaning could be derived from the book?

If you take this book seriously enough, you will learn to have a better life, a more meaningful life. Nothing like a religious life, but more of a life where your goals and dreams will come to you if you take the action to get to them. The book teaches that, your life now as it is, may seem perfect, you have a nice job that pays well, you have a significant other that loves you, you have a great family... But you still feel like something is missing. And that is your personal legend, a legend that only you can be a part of. Your goals and dreams seem far away, but the energy of the universe, of everything, puts a path right in front of you that will lead you to your dreams. The only thing you must do is listen, and walk the path given to you.
