There are many different kinds of energy parasites floating around. The one ill be talking about is closer to the idea of an actual leach. When one finds a suitable source others swarm to the location, especially at the later stages of their lives.
Their first stage is when they begin they feed off of the energies in items and places. at this point they aren't much of an issue and you usually wont notice them.
As they grow they form more solid bodies that look like large leaches. They then need more food to continue growing so they will start feeding on people and animals, but are attracted mostly to the sick and diseased.
Their next stage most don't get to because of the energy required to get there. Their bodies get thicker and grow a lot longer, until they look more like blood sucking eels. This is when they need the stronger energy of a magic user to keep them alive.
If you do come across one you could either destroy it, like most people would, or you could raise it. They are far better at absorbing energy then any of us will be.
