Man was created by the will of Allah, and in being given the honor of being his vicegerent, was endowed with spiritual insight and given the task of understanding Nature and himself. He was also given a Will that should reflect Allah's universal Will and Law: be in harmony with the infinite, experience the sublime joy of life and pursue spiritual growth.
Although created from the best of moulds, man nonetheless fell from Unity and his Will was warped. He chose the crooked path of discord, despair, ignorance, and degradation. Poisoned in his life, he began to see the shapes of evil in the physical, moral and spiritual world. And he saw evil within himself. Thus, his soul fell into discord with itself, struggling with identifying virtue, and so created castes and rankings and merits of power within the world by fearing the strong and oppressing the weak. He sought phantoms of the unity which he had erased from his mind. When men spread themselves over the earth into many nations and tongues and customs, the evils were multiplied. One race or nation was alienated from another, the Brotherhood of Man now doubly forgotten, and arrogance, selfishness and untruth were proliferated while peace, love and faith were obscured by the masses of men.
Described further is the story of Adam... In this, however, 'Adam' is not described as an individual man, but as the name for that type of mankind. The original angels were described as having been unable to understand Allah's nature, which gives and asks for love, because they themselves lacked a true free will and genuine emotions. Allah wished to create beings in his own likeness and with his capacity of will. The power of will is what, when used rightly, gives men more mastery over his own fortunes and over nature, thus bringing him closer to a God-like nature, and therefore giving the capacity for understanding the nature of Allah. After creating Adam and demonstrating to the angels the potential of man, Allah said unto the angels, "Bow down to Adam", and they bowed down.
Not so was Iblis; he refused and was haughty, and he was of those who reject faith. Then, we have the Adam & Eve story: "...but approach not this tree, or ye will run into harm and transgression." Of course, Iblis goes and draws them to that tree... intending to take them out of that state of felicity. So Allah said, "Get ye down, with enmity between yourselves on earth shall be your dwelling place and your means of livelihood for a time." However, he was merciful, and said, "...and if there comes to you guidance from me, whosoever follows my guidance shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve."

One of the things that I find interesting about all of this is that it seems to imply that "the Garden (of Eden)" may not have been on Earth... in fact, maybe not on this plane. The fall of man may have actually been from a higher consciousness or dimension. Furthermore, contrary to the popular Christian version, mankind was given the capacity for knowledge, understanding, and God-like wisdom right from the get-go. Therefore, the "Tree of Knowledge" in this story seems to actually be a "Tree of Degradation", and its fruit not unlike the Apple of Discord... the product of this was not man becoming aware of his nakedness per se, but that he began to draw arbitrary ideas of right and wrong where there need be none, and doubting his own inherent virtue. It is through this that the evils of man were born, almost like giving mankind one helluva case of OCD. We started to see evil in each other where there was none, then we took sides and fought each other.
Thus, the original Unity Consciousness was forgotten. At least, this is just the way my mind spins it... if anyone has anything to add, or some different take on it, then go on and pipe up.
